The anticipated long-term extension for defenseman Marcus Pettersson is now official.
[hide] Per the Penguins, the team has agreed to terms with Pettersson on a 5 year, $20,125,875 extension.
The deal will begin for the 2020-21 season and run through the 2024-25 season carrying an AAV of $4,025,175.
After signing a 1 year deal in September, the two sides had the frame work pretty much in place to do a long-term contract in the 4-6 year range after January 1, 2020.
Pettersson’s cap hit just north of $4 million falls right in place where expectations have been for the past few months. [/hide]

Doubt Vatanen would be part of any deal with NJ. One, not needed. The only somewhat logical replacement on D would be Schultz and even that doesnt really make sense. Two, doubt Pens would pay the necessary price to get him. Three, why waste the cap space when more pressing needs at forward?

Theres a good DK article on what the pairings should be with Schultz returning, and have used CF% to show the effectiveness of a few uses. Not surprising, Letang/JJ has been awful, and after Dumo’s injury, and before Schultz’s injury, Schultz/JJ wasnt very good either. I think part of that is the need to reduce there minutes on the ice. Him and JGP are having career years because they are the top forwards and a cellar dwelling team. It’s not complicated. JGP is a mediocre player that is putting up above average goal goals this year due to his PP time and overall minutes. He wouldn’t get those here. His shooting percentage also spiked, which obviously isn’t sustainable (18.5).And he’s not good defensively. And he’s not a good playmaker. He’s also a center. This team doesn’t need a center. He ican play center or wing,, can score goals, and is a slick stick handler and passer. he has 13 goals he is on pace for 20 easily and he is only 29 and carries a prorated $650,000 for the year. he is Tanev and Hagelin wIth more scoring touch…be a good fit.
Ennis does not fit this team that wants to be “hard to play against.” He’s not Tanev because he is weak. Soff on the puck. Not a tough bone in his body. He is not Hagelin because he is a terrible possession player. Not a PKer. No defensive ability. He does not fit this teams style of play.

It has been 4 years since Ennis did anything of substance, this year is likely an outlier based on what he became… we have lots of Ennis types. Never said Simon was anything but a 3rd liner… Ennis is barely one himself. Point is I think Simon is more valuable to this team than Ennis could be. The reason Simon plays with Crosby is because Crosby excels with guys who can win 50/50 battles and get him the puck. Simon can, Ennis would not be able to the same way. Unless someone makes a great offer for Schultz that will help them now, I would just hold on to him for the playoff run. You can never have enough depth at D during the playoffs. The way NJ is playing I do not see them having a problem trading within the conference. They are no where near what the had projected at the beginning of this season. Palmieri is not part of their future. If the Pens try and land him it will probably be for a second round pick and someone from WBS. Their on the fly rebuild idea tanked horribly.
However he would be there next year and that is why I wonder if it would be an in conference option. As a upcoming UFA its easy to make that trade, harder with term

As of now? I would argue that despite Sprongs short offensive outburst it leaned heavy in Pittsburghs favour last year when Sprong started to see himself as a healthy scratch at the end of the year.
My guess is that this means Schultz is most likely be gone after this year, but Id prefer him around 4.5M aav over Jack Johnson.
I think the Pens are stuck with JJ unless he goes in a package deal and the Pens get a similar contract back or they just buy him out.
I think JJ has been solid enough that someone would be fine taking on his 3.25M aav for the final 3 years. Thats a decent price for a veteran bottom pairing dman and good PKer. Certainly not a buyout candidate imo.
