Under the direction of new head coach Mike Johnston, the Pittsburgh Penguins report to training camp September 18 with their first on-ice session Friday, September 19. The first day of camp on the 18th will center around meetings and players under going physicals.
The Penguins will have three days of on-ice sessions before their first preseason game against the Red Wings on Monday, September 22.
According to the team, fans will have an opportunity to attend a practice that will be open to the public and free of charge on Saturday, September 20 at the Consol Energy Center. Practice begins at 9 a.m., with gates opening at 8:30 a.m.
Barring any additional camp invites, the Penguins have officially invited 57 players (34 forwards, 17 defensemen and 6 goaltenders) to camp.
The Penguins enter camp with realistically one forward spot up for grabs. Despite coming into camp on a PTO, Daniel Carcillo is looked at by team officials as a strong favorite to earn that last forward spot. Due to Penguins cap situation, Pittsburgh is likely to start the season with 13 forwards, 7 defensemen and 2 goaltenders.
