Penguins sign minor league defenseman Potter to a two-way deal

The Pittsburgh Penguins today agreed to a 1 year, 2-way contract with defenseman Corey Potter, the team announced this afternoon.

The deal is for 2010-2011 and will pay Potter $500,000 at the NHL level.

Potter, 26, has appeared in eight career NHL games with the New York Rangers. Potter was the Rangers 4th round pick in 2003.

The 6-foot-2, 195-pound blueliner has posted 21 goals , 81 assists and 102 points in 246 games with the Hartford Wolfpack, New York's top minor league affiliate.

the more guys they sign the more I think they might keep Engelland as a cheap 7th. They almost have to. I mean, if GoGo can have a good year than if the 6th d-man is below par they can play him VERY sparingly, whether its Lovejoy or Engelland.

I was critical of Gogo but I also recognize his skill set. I think if he hit the gym in the offseason he will have a good season. He's played over 125 games now so his slide curve is over. He either steps up or he will be trade bait at the deadline. He needs to shoot more and stop passing.

Don't forget his first 20 some games last season before his injury, he was shooting all the time, but importantly they all were getting to the net. His injury retarded that part of his game.

I have a feeling we may be trading some D prospects, that's why they are stocking up for depth purposes. You gotta figure D is a position of strength. The top 4 are all locks and locked for the next few years

with this signing we have 7 d men signed for WBS this year so i think its just a depth signing for them, i dont think it means we are going to trade anyone. i am also assuming engelland will be our 7th d man and despres back to the Q

Bortuzzo, Grant, Sneep, Strait, Hutchinson, Wagner, Potter, possibly Engelland. I think theres more than that in the A as well. We've got Despres, D'Agostino, Samuelsson, etc... on their way. I definitely think someone is getting moved

Oh lord no.....not Ouellet......I think this might mean that the 7 d-ma n will come from with-in. The Pens now have 45 contarcts...Prob another NHL forward and for sure a AHL tough guy. Shero began last season with 47 contracts....so I think it will be Englland and Wags competing for 7 spot. Also Grant and Sneep will be competing for 6th spot in WBS

D tweeted about agents being surprised by the lack of interest in mid-tier players. Funny, its their own fault there is no money to go around. Manangement knows there is a salary cap.. fans know.. but then a guy like Kovalpuke wants paid more than an Ovechkin or a Crosby? Gonchar getting almost six million at his age for that long? The reason GM's dont have 3 million to pay clowns like Poni is because they had to overspend to shore up bigger roster spots.... Note to agents: If the Salary Cap goes up 1%, NHL players cant be getting 25% raises or they will be riding a bus around Europe

The money is decent over there, it seems.. but the conditions are like the Indian's in "Major League". My guess is that if you aren't crazy homesick here, and get on a team by your home in Europe, the KHL loses its luster in a hurry.
