Vanek VANEK STILL UNDER CONSIDERATION FOR PENS

The Pittsburgh Penguins appear to not have totally closed the door on pursuing Tomas Vanek. While the Penguins were looking into Vanek prior to the Olympic Break, the talk of aggressively pursuing Vanek had faded some until now. Chris Botta who is very well connected with the Islanders organization reports the Penguins are showing the most interest in Vanek along with the Los Angeles Kings.
I can’t confirm it yet but don’t be surprised if the Penguins are talking to the Islanders about a package deal for Vanek and defenseman Andrew MacDonald. Some have questioned the fit for Vanek since word came out in January that the Penguins were looking at him. The Penguins along with multiple teams have interest in MacDonald, an excellent shot blocker who has just a $550,000 cap hit.
Word has been buzzing that the Penguins have been discussing Simon Despres with multiple teams, including the Islanders, Sabres and Panthers. However, the Panthers have pulled back on moving defenseman Dmitri Kulikov, a target of the Penguins.
The Penguins continue to be looking at a number of scenarios and could go in a few different directions between now and Wednesday.
