The Daniel Sprong era is over in Pittsburgh.
Sprong has been traded to the Anaheim Ducks in-exchange for left handed defenseman Marcus Pettersson.
Pettersson a 2014 2nd round pick, has totaled 1 goal and 9 assists in 49 career NHL games
Pettersson, 22, a left shot defenseman, has appeared in 27 games for the Ducks this season playing a third pairing role in averaging 14 minutes a game.
This move doesn’t address the Penguins desperate need for a top-4 defenseman, notably a RH d-man but Pettersson fits the mold of a puck moving defenseman who moved the puck well and is effective at joining the rush, at least giving the potential to being an upside addition down the road for a player who had no long-term role in Pittsburgh as long as Mike Sullivan is the coach . Agree, but you can’t throw away a season with your fingers crossed hoping that Murray turns it around. The Malkin Crosby era only has about 5 good runs left in it.
I think you’re no better off with Howard than DeSmith and Murray. It’s hard to put names out there, being that no one really knows who is and will be available. Colorado has two solid goalies and we may have some minor pieces that can help them, as they’ll probably be buyers at the deadline.
The Pens have nothing worth while in the AHL to trade for.

someone needs to ask rutherford the logic behind benching sprong because he couldn’t score, but yet jibrone gets 17 minutes of ice every night with crosby and he hasn’t scored in 10 games. aston waste skates with kessel and sometimes on malkins line and he sucks too. basically if you suck and don’t score you are in. if you have talent and potential to score but you aren’t scoring, the coach hates your guts. that makes 100% sense.

When the pens loaded up the top two lines a few weeks back they went 3-0-1. Now Sullivan is back to “line balance” and now they suck. It is not a coincidence.
the trend here is if sullivan doesn’t like you, rutherford will do what the coach wants and get rid of the guy. reeves was hated by sullivan, he’s gone. sprong hated, he’s gone. matt murray to sullivan F you, now he’s going to be gone. sullivan is turning into a real A hole.

Sprong never seemed to care. Even in training camp he played like he already had a spot and just played his mins. He may blossom into an amazing foward but it was not going to happen in Pittsburgh. They messed him up from day one when they burned a year of his ELC and then shipped him back down to the AHL. This team needs better defense and Sprong needed a change of scenery.
