–Scuttlebutt on the Penguins trade deadline plans —
Pittsburgh for weeks has preferred to stay out of the d-man market unless a significant setback pops up between now and February 24th with Brian DuMoulin who has just begun skating and had another c[heckup] on Tuesday. Adding a defenseman on a two-way contract is in play but Pittsburgh actively trying to add a legitimate top-3 pairing or a true No. 7 defenseman hasn’t been a top priority to this point. [/hide]
The focus has been on adding another veteran forward.
Pittsburgh’s brass believes when fully healthy, they are one of the deepest teams in the NHL 1-12. The team remains hopeful Nick Bjugstad will return at somepoint and they’ll be getting Zach Aston-Reese back next month, but in the wake of acquiring Jason Zucker this month, the priority is being 13-14 deep with legitimate NHL forwards. Despite the likes of Sam Lafferty and other Wilkes Barre call-ups this season showing flashes at various points, the Penguins feel they’re a depth forward away from feeling truly comfortable with the forward group for a deep playoff run.
And with the deadline just four days away, there’s been some links to former Penguins that Pittsburgh has had trade talks on.
The most prominent are talks with the Buffalo Sabres.
Word has been going around the Conor Sheary camp for about a week now that Pittsburgh is a “serious” (one source put it) option to reacquire Sheary. Sources say it’s been a scenario Pittsburgh has put on the table as one of those deadline day type of moves strongly under consideration. Things are at the point where the chips are on the table of what compensation Pittsburgh will give up. Buffalo is seeing what’s out there and will circle back. Bogosian officially put on unconditional waivers, which he will clear, and ultimately will be terminated. Curious to see if someone takes a flyer. I wouldn’t mind signing him at a minimal price to fill out depth. Wouldn’t take any assets and adding a little size for the playoffs wouldn’t be the worst thing, especially considering he’s a solid skater.
Depending on the contract ask? If it is just a 1MM deal to finish the season somewhere… I mean he has some concerning underlying figures sure but he is an absolute upgrade from Ruhwedel and Riikola in most other ways
His underlying numbers are underwhelming which does raise an eyebrow but this guy basically played on garbage rosters his entire career which is not going to help much and he isnt too far off of what Ruhwedel is doing now. This could be one of those moves made that helps the way it did in 2017
Yeah that’s basically what I was thinking. He’s been on atrocious teams pretty much his whole career. He also has a lot to play for and could really embrace playing on a contender. With all that, like you said, it’s only worth it being that the Pens wouldn’t have to give anything up.

Honestly, with the way Schultz has been playing this year, I’d entertain the thought. With his injuries and expiring contract, i don’t imagine he’d get much, but it would save some cap space and allow for some more flexibility. Possibly a playoff team out west with a winger of a similar circumstance could use some defensive help. No one immediately comes to mind, though.

No, I wouldn’t move anymore picks or young assets. If going all in to win this year, for the right return, before I’d move Murray, Schultz, Petterrson, Bjugstad, ZAR. For moving some combination of those players I’d want a legit top 4 LHD, legit top 6 LW or 3C.

If the Pens want a versatile depth winger, Darren Helm would be at the top of the list for me. Great speed, very responsible defensive game, grinder, can chip in offensively. Only issue is his contract at 3.85 aav through next season. If they can make the salary work (trade Bjugstad) id do it.
I like this idea more than Shears… kid did his thing and helped out but the idea of a rental? Helm is a better option than Sheary because of his versatility. Production-wise it is a bit of a wash but I like that Helm can do so much more and he is a little bigger. I do balk a bit at the age but his game won’t likely suffer all that much through 33-34 I would still prefer a Kase type, again, if he can be had for a relatively low price.
