The St. Louis Blues protected tough guy Ryan Reaves out of fear that the Pittsburgh Penguins were going to workout a deal with the Vegas Golden Knights.
But every team has a price and the Penguins have paid one for Reaves.
Pittsburgh has traded the 31st overall pick and center Oskar Sundqvist to St. Louis for Reaves and the 51st overall pick.
Rutherford will likely get crushed for the cost but mission accomplished in adding a tough guy who can actually play.
Reaves, 30, carries a $1.125 million cap hit and is signed for one more season. He had a career high 7 goals in 16-17 and added 104 penalty minutes.

2 year hiatus and I see we are all (or most) still behaving badly. ;-(. This will be one of the most exciting and controversial off-seasons in a while. But the bottom line is there is no way we go for three unless our better players are allowed space and have a deterrent or a response for the abuse they take through the season. More to come btw, they are still going to get a physical presence on the back end. That should lead to another meltdown that we traded a Blueger and Wilson for anyone other than Bobby Orr.

The most pressing need was augmenting the blue line, while I want to give Reaves a chance to prove he can play on this team before I really bitch the fact remains that Archibald, Sprong, Simon and Reese will possibly looking for a full time roll sooner than later, all are skilled players. If he can skate with the team and be more of an energy guy, rather than an enforcer, like JR and SS seem to believe, well all be very happy with the trade. Im skeptical, yet hopeful.

7 year career, Reaves average time on ice = 8 minutes. Never averaged more than 9 minutes in any year. This is what you get for a 1st and a top prospect? + a 1.125 cap hit? Averages a minute and a half penalty minutes per game!

Kane defends Crosby or Malkin better as he’s actually able to play on the ice at the same time and throw hands.

I don’t mind getting Reaves, but wtf would we trade a first round pick? He’s 30 and has like 27 goals. Losing the Fleury contract was a good thing and the 2nd/Sunqvist doesn’t bother me, but we will need to do something with this space. Thought we could’ve packaged the first in with someone to fill a need. This trade was abysmal.
