The Penguins head into Thursday’s pivotal matchup against the Philadelphia Flyers with the 23rd ranked power play unit in the National Hockey League at 15.9%.
The Penguins are 1-for-34 this month and 2 for their last 48.
Against the Detroit Red Wings on Monday, head coach Dan Bylsma took Alex Kovalev off the first unit and it appears things will remain status quo for Thursday night.
Kovalev remained on the second unit in today’s workout at Southpointe, while Paul Martin ran the point with the first unit.

The coaching staff appears to be trying to even out both units in an attempt to give the opposition different looks.
On the first unit today, Tyler Kennedy – Chris Kunitz and James Neal worked down low with Kris Letang at the left point and Paul Martin at the right point.
On the second unit today, Pascal Dupuis, Jordan Staal and Dustin Jeffrey worked down low with Matt Niskanen and Alex Kovalev at the points.
Kovalev on the second unit for Monday was interesting as it appears his role is starting to be slowly phased out.
