With concerns that Billy Guerin can still play a top-6 role or be a fit in a 3rd and 4th line role, the Penguins have targeted veteran center Rob Niedermayer in free agency.
Although no offer is currently on the table, the Penguins have had multiple discussions with Niedermayer’s agent Kevin Epp. Niedermayer has yet to make a decision on whether to push forward in talks with the Penguins, although a decision is expected in the next couple days.
The Penguins are looking to spend about one million per season on a forward. The pursuit of Niedermayer is a sign that the team has envisions of Jordan Staal playing a prominent role on the top-2 lines.
The team is also believed to have an interest in center Jeff Halpern.
