PITTSBURGH 6 – ARIZONA 5
Garrett Jones had three hits and two RBIs, Starling Marte provided a spark in the fourth inning driving in two runs and the Pittsburgh Pirates (3-5) beat the Arizona Diamondbacks (5-3) 6-5 Tuesday night for their first winning streak of the season.
The Pirates taking the first two games of the season, have scored 11 runs in their last two games and posted a season high 11 hits tonight.
Trailing 4-1, Marte provided a spark in the fourth inning with an RBI double, ripping an 0-2 pitch down the right field line and Marte posted his fourth consecutive multi-hit game going 2-5 with a double, 2 RBIs, 2 runs scored and a stolen base. Travis Snider also had two hits in the win and Neil Walker drove in two runs.
The Pirates fell into an early hole after James McDonald (1-1, 3.75 ERA) allowed four runs in the first inning, but the Pirates rallied with a five-run fourth inning off Arizona starter Brandon McCarthy (0-1, 7.71 ERA). McDonald allowed 4 hits and 4 earned runs in 5 innings pitched. McDonald struck out 5 and walked 4 in the win.
The Pirates bullpen was strong and Mark Melancon pitched a scoreless eighth inning and continues to look very good hitting 92, 93 with movement tonight. Jason Grilli picked up his 3rd save of the season.
