Insider Only Pirates beat Red Sox 3-2; Post-Game Observations

Trailing 2-0 with one out in the ninth inning, the Pirates farm system came through Thursday afternoon. Jose Tabata and Neil Walker each walked and top prospect Pedro Alvarez doubled scoring Neil Walker. Alvarez reached for a outside fastball and connected as the ball hit the left/center fence. With the bases loaded Jose Tabata scored on a groundout at first to tie the game at 2-2. Tabata, Walker, and Alvarez all played key roles in the Pirates 3-2 win. The Pirates open the grapefruit league 2-0
Other than Ian Snell, who struggled with his control, the Pirates pitched very well.

Pitchers:
Ian Snell: 2 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 3 K
Ross Ohlendorf: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 3 K

,

Jimmy Barthmaier: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB
Denny Bautista: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Sean Burnett: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
Tyler Yates: 1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 0 BB, 1 K
* Ross Ohlendorf continued his strong performance from spring training to the grapefruit league today. Three strikeouts in two innings and most importantly, no walks. It’s early but he currently has the inside track on getting a spot in the rotation.
* Shortstop Brian Bixler was 0-4 at the plate and had an error. Cruiz is going to beat him out for a roster spot.
Another Strong game for 2B Shelby Ford. A three run homerun in the opener and a two hit game today. Management likes him.
Not a good day at the plate for Andrew McCutchen. He was 0-2 and didn’t show good patience. He was reaching for some balls.
Jose Tabata is showing some speed on the basepads. Some people are turned off by his attitude. He does have a swagger about him but the kid has a lot of potential.
Good outing for Sean Burnett and Tyler Yates. Both players continue to pitch well.
The Pirates had a lot of speed on the basepads today with Morgan, McCutchen but the team is not aggressive at all. To win they to play small ball and it seems like Russell isn’t going to move in that direction.
A few notes form yesterday:
Adam Laroche still can’t hit a changeup. Every time I watch him closely it seems like he is trying too hard. He was 0-2 at the plate against the Phillies on Wednesday
Craig Hansen needed a good performance after struggling in practice and he got it. Showed very good control.
More to come later.
