The Pittsburgh Pirates (5-3) homered five times but four of the home runs came after the Pirates trailed 7-1 as the Pirates suffered their third loss of the season, losing to the Cubs 7-5 (3-5) on Wednesday night.
Jason Hammel threw seven strong innings and the Cubs broke the game open in the 5th with home runs from Mike Olt and Jake Lake off Pirates starter Wandy Rodriguez and Chicago went up 4-1 with a 3-run 5th inning.
Chicago would tack on three more runs in the 6th to go up 7-1.
Wandy Rodriguez allowed 9 hits and 4 earned runs in 5 innings pitched, taking the loss. Rodriguez was roughed up in the 5th.
The Pirates had the long ball going on a night they didn’t get the pitching. Pedro Alvarez homered twice for his second multi home run game of the season. Alvarez who went 2-4, hit an opposite field solo home run in the 5th and added another solo shot in the 9th. Russell Martin also hit two home runs and Travis Snider homered in the loss.
