Pirates reach agreement with shortstop Bobby Crosby; Deal Pending Physical

The Pittsburgh Pirates and shortstop Bobby Crosby have reached an agreement on a one year deal, multiple sources tell me.

The deal is pending a physical. The deal is not expected to be official until Wednesday at the earliest.

John Perrotto indicates the deal is expected to be worth $1.5 million.

Crosby, 29, hit .223 with 6 home runs and 29 RBI's in 272 plate appearances for the Oakland A's this year.

Scouting Report Assets Knows his way around a baseball diamond. Adds a steady bat, good power and speed, as well as good defensive skills and a strong arm. Flaws His range is a little suspect and he's a big-time free swinger, which leads to huge strikeout totals. A lingering back injury has become a problem. Career potential A solid everyday shortstop when healthy.

Crosby wasn't signed to be a starter. The Pirates said that themselves. He's going to start as a bench player, which is where he fits best right now. Crosby > Luis Cruz. This is an upgrade.
