The Pittsburgh Pirates have signed small, speedy outfielder Chi Ping-hong out of Shiyuan High School, (Taiwan) to a minor league contract, according to East Windup Chronicle.
Chi bats left-handed, stands at a fringy 5'7 (!) and weighs in at 145 pounds.
He gets well above average run times and has a knack for contact with a decent stroke. Defensively he has good range due to his speed but a poor throwing arm.
The East Windup Chronicle reports Chi was signed by Pirates Asia scout Chiang Fu-Chun. Chiang was impressed by Chi’s work habits and drive to try his hand at major league baseball.
He noted that Chi is aware of the fact that he’ll have an uphill climb to the majors due to his smaller stature, but relished the challenge anyways.
Chi signed a 2009 contract with a lower bonus and will begin his journey in the minor leagues in Australia.
