AROUND THE BASES
The Pittsburgh Pirates (26-30) rebounded from a disastrous three game set against the New York Mets to take 3 of 4 from the Los Angeles Dodgers, capping off the series with a 5-3 win on Sunday night.
Andrew McCutchen hit his first home run in 32 games and added a pair of doubles to help the Pirates pull within four games of .500.
Pedro Alvarez added two hits and had three RBIs. Josh Harrison homered in the win.
“It’s good that we were able to get three out of four against a really good team here in L.A.,” McCutchen said after the win. “We haven’t done that in a long time, so it’s a step in the right direction, definitely.”
A series like this can be a step in the right direction but it remains nothing if they go out and lose 2 of 3 to the Padres. For a team that has been playing around .500 ball since last July, it remains to be seen if the Pirates have a big win streak or run in them to get out of this back and fourth of being around three to six games under .500.
Edison Volquez earned his third win of the season, allowing five hits and two runs over five innings.
