The Pirates are telling teams this week they’re likely to keep Pedro Alvarez, Jayson Stark reports.

The Pirates have been shopping Alvarez for months in the hopes of opening up payroll but there’s been little to no interest in Alvarez elsewhere who has struggled mightily in the field at first base and continues to be up and down at the plate.
Pirates GM Neal Huntington has been kicking the tires on right handed hitting first basemen, Boston’s Mike Napoli among them, but a deal only happens there if the Red Sox are willing to pick up almost all of Napoli’s remaining salary, a source said. Napoli is making $16 million this season.
