The Pittsburgh Pirates will not tender pitcher Jeff Karstens. The move is not surprising as indications for a few weeks have been that the organization would let Karstens go who projected to make around $4 million in arbitration and Rob Biertempfel of the Tribune-Review confirms the news. The Pirates brass didn’t view Karstens as durable enough to be a starting pitcher they can count on.
The Pirates will tender Neil Walker, Joel Hanrahan, Garrett Jones, Gaby Sanchez and James McDonald. Out of that group, Hanrahan is projected to make close to $7 million in 2013. In addition to Karstens, the other player in question leading into today has been Charlie Morton. He’s likely to be tendered but no official word on him yet.
