The Pittsburgh Pirates have traded Erik Hinske to the New York Yankees in exchange for outfielder/catcher Eric Fryer and right-handed pitcher Casey Erickson.
Outfielder Garrett Jones will have his contract selected from Indianapolis and is expected to join the Pirates in Pittsburgh in time for Tuesday night’s game against the Chicago Cubs.
Fryer, 23, hit .250 (56-for-224) with 11 doubles, two home runs, 24 RBI and 34 runs scored in 59 games with the Sin-
gle-A Tampa Yankees this season. He made 55 appearances in left field, five at catcher and one in right field while play-
ing with Tampa.
Originally selected by Milwaukee in the 10th round of the 2007 First-Year Player Draft, Fryer was acquired by the Yankees in exchange for left-handed pitcher Chase Wright on 2/4/09. He will be assigned to Lynchburg (A).
As a member of the West Virginia Power in 2008, Fryer led the South Atlantic League with a .335 batting average and
.407 on-base percentage while ranking third with a .506 slugging percentage.
He also tallied 26 doubles, 10 home runs and 63 RBI in 104 games and was named to the league’s post-season All-Star team last season.
The 23-year-old Erickson went 3-3 with a 2.25 ERA (44.0ip/11er) in 21 games (three starts) with Single-A Charleston
(SC) this season. In his 18 relief appearances, he posted a 1.10 ERA, giving up just four earned runs and striking out 33
batters in 32.2 innings pitched. Erickson will be assigned to West Virginia (A).
Erickson was originally selected by the Yankees in the 10th round of the 2006 First-Year Player Draft and made his pro
debut with the GCL Yankees in 2006. He went 6-1 with a 2.95 ERA in 19 combined games (15 starts) with Charleston and
Single-A Staten Island of the New York-Penn League.
Jones, who was a non-roster player with Pittsburgh this spring, batted .307 (85-for-277) with 18 doubles, 12 home runs,
48 RBI and 14 stolen bases in 72 games with Indianapolis this year. The 28-year-old Jones is currently among the Inter-
national League leaders in home runs (T4th), RBI (3rd), total bases (T2nd with 139), batting average (9th), doubles
(T8th), hits (3rd) and stolen bases (T9th).
