Pitt sophomore guard Ashton Gibbs (Scotch Plains, N.J.) was named the Big East Men’s Basketball Player of the Week on Monday by the league office. Gibbs’ selection is Pitt’s first Big East weekly honor of the 2009-10 season.
A leading candidate for the Big East Most Improved Player award, Gibbs averaged 23.5 points, 7.5 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game, shot 63.6 percent (14-22) from the floor and converted 69.2 percent (9-13) of his 3-point attempts in Pitt’s back-to-back wins over No. 5 ranked Syracuse and DePaul. In addition, Gibbs established a new school record for most consecutive free throws made and has currently connected on 37 straight free throw attempts.
He scored 24 points (7-11 FG), hit a career-high tying 6-9 3-pointers and grabbed a career-high eight rebounds in 38 minutes at Syracuse on Jan. 2. Against DePaul on Dec. 28, Gibbs finished with 23 points (7-11 FG), hit 3-4 3-pointers in a 65-52 win.
On the year, Gibbs averages 17.4 points per game, 2.8 rebounds and is converting 40.2 percent (35-87) of his 3-point attempts. He also leads the league in free throw shooting at 94.2 percent (49-52).
The last Pitt player to earn Big East Player of the Week honors was current Memphis Grizzlies player Sam Young on March 8, 2009.
Currently on a five-game win streak and winners of eight of its last nine, No. 23 ranked Pitt (12-2, 2-0 Big East) plays at Cincinnati tonight. Tipoff is at 7 p.m. ET at Fifth Third Arena. The contest will be nationally televised on ESPN.
