The University of Pittsburgh has hired Miami of Ohio's Mike Haywood as their new head coach, to replace Dave Wannstedt who was pushed out by the administration.
ESPN's Joe Shad reports Haywood will receive a 5 year deal.
Haywood, 46, led Miami of Ohio to a 9-4 record and a MAC Championship in 2010. Haywood has drawn high praise for Miami's turnaround after the Redhawks posted a 1-11 record in Haywood's first season as coach in 2009.
Haywood previously coached at Notre Dame, Texas and LSU. He will become the first African American coach in Pittsburgh's history.
The Panthers are expected to have a press conference on Thursday to introduce Haywood.
Current Pitt offensive coordinator Frank Cignetti who had strong interest in the job is not expected to join Haywood's staff.
