Pitt moves up to No. 8 in AP poll

The Pittsburgh Panthers are off to their best start (8-1) in 27 years and have earned their highest AP ranking in 20 years as the Panthers moved up six spots to No. 8 in the AP poll that was released this afternoon.

Penn State fell to No. 19 after a disappointing home loss to Ohio State. Florida remains No.1 in the AP poll.

Here's how a 16 team playoff bracket would look like today based on the AP poll, if college football ever went to such a thing.

Playoff Bracket

1. Florida (9-0) vs 16 Utah (8-1)

2. Texas (9-0) vs 15 Iowa (8-1)

3. Alabama (9-0) vs 14 Oregon (7-2)

4. TCU (9-0) vs 13 Houston (8-1)

5. Cincinnati (9-0) vs 12 Miami (7-2)

6. Boise State (9-0) vs 11 USC (7-2)

That's because the obvious big name teams have played a number of ranked teams. Pitt will logically move up assuming they win in their next couple of games.

I'm all for axing the BCS but...16 team playoff? that'd be a little bit ridiculous...what would you do, cut four games off of the regular season? start earlier or end later? I can't see it being changed anytime soon, unfortunately.

A 16 team format would work just like the Bowl Season works, the Bowl season is Dec 19 to Feb 6...That would be more than enough time to have a playoff.

The last 3 bowls are all star bowls, so technically the real bowls end Jan 7th...the Final would be the 9th or 16th...Not too bad...

if you cut out the 3 to 4 week break between the last game and bowl games there would be plenty of weeks in the schedule for playoffs

I totally agree with chance, there is plenty of time for a playoff if you start playing them on like dec 12th. So much more interesting because you know it wouldnt always be florida vs (insert ohio state/texas/ usc) every year. such a stupid system they have now.

I think if Pitt ran the table they would be at 4...Alabama and Florida have to play and someone has to lose, putting one of those two behind Pitt...Possibly 3 based on the strength of schedule with these last 3 games...Beat Notre Dame and we can get more hyped on speculating...(even though it's the least important of the remaining games)

the playoffs would also create the new matchups. put some teams together that have nver played against each other. i think that would benifit college football so much. hey even the president said there should be a playoff system. next thing hes gonna do is have the goverment take control of college football

Have the playoff games at independent sites and split the revenue just like bowl games no money would be lost. They would still have everything down to the timeouts sponsered by corporations just like the do now im sure

But yea it will probally never happen. they are just fine with the computer doing all the work and them sitting back collecting the checks. and it also takes the blame off of them when ppl complain about being ranked wrong. all the have to say now is "well the computer did it not me".

They need to change the ranking systems such as 3 pts for a ranked win, 2 for unranked, 1 for a loss to rank team, etc.

If either Florida or Alabama's only loss is against the other, I don't see either falling behind a one loss Pitt.
