semin The Carolina Hurricanes have placed Alex Semin on waivers with the intention to buy him out. Semin signed a five year, $35 million extension with the Hurricanes in 2013 and has three years left on his contract.
Semin was due $21 million over the next three years and the buyout will cost the Hurricanes $14 million in cash over the next several seasons.
After Semin clears waivers tomorrow, he will be an unrestricted free agent.
Semin’s agent Todd Diamond when reached for comment called it “possible” that Semin could be a potential fit with the Penguins this summer but the Semin camp won’t know until tomorrow what teams are realistic fits until they can discuss numbers with teams on Wednesday. The Semin camp does have permission to “gauge interest” with teams today but can’t officially talk money until tomorrow.
With Rutherford being the GM who gave out the massive deal to Semin, the Penguins have been linked to Semin for months, but there has been little to no support from others in the organization to pursue Semin.

We’ll see if that now changes due to significantly less financial ramifications as Semin will struggle to have interest around the league, even at a salary of $2-$3 million per.
Elsewhere, Brad Boyes has also been placed on waivers and will be bought out. He is a player the Penguins had discussed trading for on the cheap — likely they’ll kick the tires.
