shero Former Pittsburgh Penguins General Manager Ray Shero has been named General Manager of the New Jersey Devils.
Shero replaces Lou Lamoriello who steps down from the GM role and will remain Team President.
“Ray is well-respected throughout the hockey industry and knows what it takes to win,” said Lamoriello in a released statement. “His 22 seasons of NHL front-office experience will be beneficial to the New Jersey Devils organization. I look forward to working alongside Ray.”
The Penguins will receive no draft pick compensation. Shero’s $3.5 million salary for next season comes off the books.
Lamoriello said in a conference call the coaching hire will be strictly Ray Shero’s call. Dan Bylsma has not been in demand with recent openings but will certainly get strong consideration with Shero now in charge.
Two others names to watch:

John Hynes in Wilkes Barre and Tony Granato in Detroit.
It’s very likely Jason Botterill will follow Shero in New Jersey.
