Reds 8 – Pirates 0

DHP_7582 The Pittsburgh Pirates September collapse continued Sunday afternoon with a 8-0 loss to the Reds at PNC Park as the lowly Reds took three of four from the Pirates.

The Pirates falling to 69-72 on the season, have lost 11 of 13. Pittsburgh is also now 36-38 at home.

This was a disaster from the start with the Reds putting up a five run second inning off Ryan Vogelsong.

Vogelsong lasted just four innings, allowing 7 hits, 6 earned, while walking three and striking out none. Vogelsong had no command in throwing 34 strikes on 72 pitches.

The boost Vogelsong brought to the rotation in his first couple starts back from injury is now ancient history. There is zero reason to throw him back out there this season with the Pirates now in 2017 mode.

Vogelsong’s struggles saw Tyler Glasnow see his first action in the Majors since July 23.

Glasnow allowed 5 hits and 2 earned runs, striking out 3 and walking 1. He threw 58 pitches, 35 for strikes, including six swinging strikes.

Aside from Jung Ho Kang who had two singles, Pirates hitters had no fight in them.

The team had just seven hits, no extra base hits and struck out 9 times. The Pirates went 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and left 10 on base.

This loss and one the last Sunday vs the Brewers, a 10-0 defeat, only happens to teams that have packed things in.
