Av’s have been scouting Ryan Whitney for the past month but it would likely cost Jordan Staal

During last night’s Hotstove segment of CBC’s Hockey Night in Canada with Ron MacLean, Al Strachan, Mike Milbury and Pierre Lebrun, Strachan indicated that veteran forward Ryan Smyth was available. Smyth, 32, has registered 18 goals and 26 assists in 56 games with the Avalanche. The Colorado Avalanche have shown an interest in Ryan Whitney and Jordan Staal throughout the season.
If the Penguins were to move on Smyth, Whitney would not get it done and it’s believed the Av’s would absolutely demand Jordan Staal to be involved. Ray Shero has been very active working the phones and you can expect him to make an inquiry. Smyth is under contract through the 2011/2012 season with a cap hit of $6.25 million. Smyth has a NTC.
Pittsburgh has previously inquired about Avalanche forward Milan Hejduk who also has a NTC.
