Report: St. Louis Blues acquire Jaroslav Halak

The Montreal Canadiens have traded goaltender Jaroslav Halak to the St. Louis Blues, according to TSN.CA.

The Habs receive defenceman Lars Eller and forward Ian Schultz.

Halak led the Canadiens on their surprising playoff run, upending heavy favorites Washington and Penguins.

Halak, 25, went 26-13-5 in the regular season with a 2.40 goals against average.

Halak split goaltending duties with Carey Price and eventually won the No. 1 job late in the season. Halak is scheduled to become a restricted free agent this summer which fueled talk over the past couple weeks that the Canadiens would look to sell high and deal Halak who is believed to be seeking a Marc Andre Fleury type of contract.

Halak is represented by Allan Walsh who also represents Fleury. Many believe that Halak's price tag is in the $5 million range.

he only played well for about a month, i like price better for a career. Its laughable that he wants that much money how at all can he say hes worth as much as MAF good decision to trade him

this seems strange, i thought halak was unreal in the playoffs. maybe price will have a better career, but this is a move that could bite them in the ass pretty soon

eller seems to be a pretty promising top 6 forward. not sure on schultz. (eller is not a Defenseman) eller also has 2 years remaining on his entry level deal. hockeysfuture isnt letting me on so i couldnt look schultz up.

also, eller was selected 13th overall in 2007. so he is a top prospect.

It was a pretty solid move, they can afford to keep both goalies. In the end I do believe Price will turn out to be a better goalie. Having said that, I think they could have gotten a little more for Halak

I think people posting don't realize that eller has great potential and still has 2 years on his deal, while halak's contract is expiring. Price is a first round pick, they obviously have more faith in his long term potential. Plus, does anyone know how good schultz is?

just found out, schultz is a grinding winger with top 6 power forward potential, drafted in the 3rd round in 08. so all-in-all, i think it was a good move for both sides.

The Habs must like Shultz and Eller. If Halak were to sign a Fleury contract as an RFA, they'd get a 1st, 2nd, and 3rd rounder in return.

Eller is far from Backstrom. Eller excelled in the junior leagues and olympic whereas Backstrom raised his game playing with the big boys

D could only go off his sources' word and lets be honest he usually gets pretty solid leads from his sources. He isn't Eklund making stuff up and he doesn't have the type of contacts McKenzie does. If all signs pointed to Therrien leaving and sources said it was so, then its hard not to report it and get the jump on folks.

If this was inside new jersey sports.com it would be "fail".........Anyways, was going off of leads from contacts close to Therrien who were insisting he was in negotiations and heading to New Jersey. However, I never reported that he will be hired (just what those close to Therrien were saying) as i wasn't able to get any league contacts to confirm.

I still think the Habs could have commanded more for the guy... Eller if he pans out will be decent but if he struggles this guy will most likely bolt back to europe! St Lou just got a lot better! Took a step back this past season but I imagine they will be pretty good come 2010/11
