Penguins GM Jim Rutherford this morning appeared on The Fan Morning Show from the 8:00 – 9:00 A.M. hour and among the interesting topics Rutherford addressed is the decision to play Phil Kessel with Sidney Crosby, the “risk” Pascal Dupuis is taking, hinting at a possible second line combination that will have a lot of grit on Evgeni Malkin’s wing and his admiration for what Sergei Gonchar can bring to the table.
On the decision to play Kessel with Crosby to start camp:
“That’s really Mike Johnston’s decision. He has to start somewhere,” Rutherford told the hosts.”We have luxury he can play with Crosby or Malkin. So to start camp that’s what he [Mike Johnston] felt.”
Malkin was disappointed to lose Hornqvist as a winger last season:

“We’re going to give Sergei a real good shot at making [it]. There are some things that he can bring to the table that we need. If he can do well in preseason and show that he can keep the pace, he’s going to have a good chance to catch a spot.”

So worst case scenario is that Dupuis develops a clit or major bleed or worse. Kunitz doesn’t rebound. Plotnikov is a bust. Fehr never clicks from joining the team late. This year could suck or it could be awesome. Oh yeah, and then there’s the D… Regardless, I am hoping for the best and can’t wait for us to know what we got.
Crosby plays just fine with a clit…
Anyone think gmjr isn’t done yet? How much cap is left? Lovejoy or scuderi to free up cap space.
I still feel like malkin excels better with a sniper on his line. Maybe with hornqvist and plotnikov it will make him shoot more. Not sure those two will create enough space for him when they’re competing in front of the net.

I admit I wasn’t a fan of gmjr when he was first hired but man, he really put his stamp on this team. Kessel alone is exciting but add in fehr bonino etc. Unlike shero who addressed the lack of forward depth by drafting defense and getting career ahlers, gmjr fixed the depth issue within one year.
I have been on a roller coaster ride with JR. I thought he had a real good off season last year, then he made that polarizing trade but even worse.. hooked us on the cap. Then this off season hits and he is like superstar status lol. Looking forward to the on ice product tho.
Ya, Grandpa has made a few stupid moves but the good is greater than the bad for sure. Time will tell how our D core works out. It could be scary but I would rather go this route than stocking up on D and giving Crosby/Malkin hobits to play with.
End of the day the deflated D we had in the playoffs is not what let this team down, structure seemed to be fine and the guys bought in even if some where in over their head. We still kept NY to a couple… we just couldnt score.

I think Perron would work best with Malkin and Hornqvist but like Sam said earlier, Plotnikov may start there, more than likely due to the Russian connection (communication). I think speed needs to be spread evenly through the lineup. Crosby and Kessel could take on Kunitz or Plotnikov. Bonino needs someone on his line with speed (Dupuis?). Cullen should provide enough speed for 4th line.
Kunitz – Crosby – Kessel
Perron – Malkin – Hornqvist
Fehr – Bonino – Dupuis
Plotnikov – Cullen – Bennett
Malkin’s line should have enough skill/tenacity to overcome any lack of speed.
I wouldn’t mind perron malkin hornqvist line, would give him a shooter and a net front presence. I’m excited to see what plotnikov brings and watch him lay out some devastating hits.
kunitz ,dupuis perron and Plotinikov will all be rotating in the top 9 during the season .only players that wont be roatating at 100 % is crosby and malkin. horny and kessel they might switch spots too but that’s a low probability

The Hockey Press and sportsblog.com are reporting the Pens are in on him, a bunch of other sources are saying that he could be moved by the Rangers for cap reasons.
