sutter LATEST ON BRANDON SUTTER

When the Penguins had Brandon Sutter actively on the trade market around the draft, his value wasn’t as high as the Penguins had hoped and the Penguins are stuck in a situation right now of whether they sell lower on him than they would like or make the mistake they’ve done the last couple years in letting quality players but players who are not core players walk for nothing at the end of their contracts.
Brooks Orpik, Paul Martin, the list goes on and on. Those type of players should have been moved for assets.
The Sutter situation is something that has Rutherford a bit torn.
“I’m not exploring deals,” Rutherford said today on 937 The Fan when asked about Sutter. “Will say I get calls on him. I’m going to watch this closely, be a little cautious. Player we don’t want to lose for nothing. I’m a little bit torn there.”
Rutherford noted that maybe the Penguins can go all in with Sutter and play things out and see where it goes next summer but the quote he made “player we don’t to lose for nothing” adds up to what the Penguins are trying to do right now on the free agency market in adding a skilled bottom-6 center at a lesser cost as insurance for Sutter for when they likely eventually move him and someone to hold down the spot until Oskar Sundqvist is ready.
