SUNDAY’S CAMP BUZZ
The Penguins are confident enough in Rob Scuderi bouncing back this season, he has worked extensively with Kris Letang as a pairing through three on-ice sessions.
“We’re trying to work together, make sure we feel comfortable. Training camp is all about {getting} comfortable,” Letang said of working with Scuderi as a pairing.
Scuderi was signed in July 2013 with the mindset that he would be an ideal security blanket for Letang whose erratic play had concerned management, many who are still here, despite the GM change. Injuries to both players and Scuderi’s declining play last season made it clear Scuderi was not an ideal partner for Letang, but the new coaching staff believes the two are worth a look once again.
The plan all summer long has been for Christian Ehrhoff and Paul Martin to be paired together as the Penguins No. 1 pairing and that’s been the case for three straight days.
An ideal candidate to be paired with Letang is Olli Maatta. The Penguins, though, would like for Maatta to anchor a third pairing as team officials felt he got taxed late last season and don’t want him playing heavy top-4 minutes, coming off shoulder surgery.
