Negotiations between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the agent for Casey Hampton have intensified in the past 48 hours with talks going into late Wednesday evening.

Sources indicate the framework of a deal is in place that would guarantee Hampton about $12 million in guarantees in the first two years of the deal.

Negotiations into Wednesday evening centered around few minor sticking points, including a proposed roster bonus that would be due after the second year of the contract.

The deal prosposed by Pittsburgh is a front loaded deal

Sources indicate significant progress has been made with guaranteed money and length of contract agreed upon and both sides are hopeful to finalize a deal by late Thursday morning.

In guarantees and base pay, Hampton would receive over $15 million through the first two years of the deal, an offer that would be risky to pass up, considering the possibility that the Steelers break off talks until after the draft, like they did with Max Starks last off-season.

Those roster bonuses always seem to be code for "money you won't get because it will force us to cut you a week before it's owed to you"

good to hear...now who's next - Clark or Colon? - or do we actually try to go after a corner via FA or trade???...i saw on sportscenter today that Nnamdi Asomugha from Oakland might be available...i'd give up our 1st rounder+ for him

asomugha would be fantastic in black and gold but he costs way to much for that to ever happen plus I think it would really help the team to just sign clark back for 3 yrs

Asomugha is making like $14mm or something like that for the next two years, that's downright stupid. The next players to get looked at IMO will be Reed getting the transition tag, Clark may come back after FA starts, but then they will try to extend Woodley and/or Holmes.

Contract Information for Nnamdi Asomugha 2/19/2009: Signed a three-year, $45.3 million contract. The first two years, totaling $28.6 million, are fully guaranteed. Another $4.7 million is available through incentives. To keep Asomugha through 2011, the Raiders must pay him either the franchise number for quarterbacks that year OR $16.875 million, whichever number is greater.
