Frank Summers, the Steelers 5th round pick in 2009, will sign with the San Diego Chargers, a league source tells Inside Pittsburgh Sports
The Steelers offered Summers a contract to return but Summers see’s the Chargers as a better fit due to their style of offense, source indicates. Other teams were also in the mix for his services.
Summers had an interest in returning but in the end, did not see the Steelers offense as an optimal fit. He informed the Steelers on Friday of his decision to decline their offer.
Summers who made the Steelers 53-man roster in his rookie season, was among the Steelers final cuts this past season as the Steelers kept Jonathan Dwyer over him.
A 5th round pick in 2009, the Steelers had high expectations for Summers as a hybrid back and potential goal line back. Things didn’t pan out but some close to the team feel the Steelers didn’t properly develop Summers.
The Steelers currently have 3 running backs under contract for next season in Rashard Mendenhall, Isaac Redman and Dwyer. Mewelde Moore is their only free agent.
