The Pittsburgh Steelers have placed the franchise tag on left tackle Max Starks. The move guarantees Starks a salary of $8.451 million. The Steelers are currently in talks with Starks on a long-term deal in the 5 year range.
The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports, “The franchise tag placed on Starks was non-exclusive, meaning he is allowed to talk with other NFL teams about a contract.” If Starks were to sign elsewhere, the Steelers would be compensated with two first round picks.
The Tribune-Review first reported this afternoon that the Steelers were considering placing the franchise tag on Max Starks or Bryant McFadden
A source tells Inside Pittsburgh Sports

The Steelers had their first set of discussions with Drew Rosenhaus the agent for Bryant Mcfadden this morning. Discussions with McFadden are expected to pickup throughout the combine and the Steelers will likely make their first offer this week.
There has been mixed opinions on McFadden throughout the organization but I’m told the Steelers will make a competitive offer but it may be very difficult to re-sign McFadden.
Two of the top Corners off the Market
Cornerback Nmandi Asomugha re-signed with the Oakland Raiders ( 3yrs – $46 million, $26 million guaranteed)
The Houston Texans placed the franchise tag on Cornerback Dunta Robinson
Rosenhaus has a lot of bargaining power with McFadden now becoming one of the top three corners that could hit the open market.
The Steelers have also not ruled out re-signing Marvel Smith and talks are on-going. Also in talks with Trai Essex. Incentive deal on the table to Smith.
