Guerin remains an option after other targets

Any talk the Pittsburgh Penguins have closed the door on re-signing 39 year old forward Billy Guerin is premature, according to multiple team sources, Sunday evening.

Inside Pittsburgh Sports has learned, Pens GM Ray Shero has not informed Guerin or agent Bob Murray, that the Penguins are no longer interested in bringing the veteran back.

I remember an article on here by MM that said Cooke probably won't be back as well, but that was with a $2m+ salary that was rumored he woudl get on the open market. I completely agreed with that and I think most should have.

I read a while back that Afino was trying to keep his conditioning high, so at one point he stopped into a local rec-pick up game and scored something like 17 goals, never getting off the ice. That type of commitment is pretty cool, and I can only imagine how Malkin and Afino would feed off of each other. Not just with points, but having that friendly Russian presence around.

Feds did drop Colby not that long ago with one punch if i remember correctly. He broke his hand, but he at least isn't afraid to throw down. And Afino once tossed Doug Weight like a rag doll..

It's easy to comment on those moves after the fact, but no one was complaining about signing Feds and very few complaints about Poni. I still don't see the harm in trying any move during the season. Again, the roster is not filled out yet so nothing is final.

All I'm saying is...planning on the Geno-Staal combo to work is foolish because if it doesn't work, then Geno has no wingers. You can try Geno and Staal throughout the year, but you have to go into the season planning to use all 3 separately or else we're in trouble

I think the wing point you made Jeffed in very valid. That's also why I don't see an issue with trying this move. If Tangradi make/gets called up and produces and Kunitz can score with some regularity, then I don't feel that the move with be long lasting if it is not working. Drafting and bringing in young wingers is the only way that this system will work with the 3 centers without having to move one for good. With the focus in this years draft on wingers and with Tangradi and Jeffrey in the system, maybe all they need to one year more year until they have they wings they need.

Geno would have Max and tangradi as wingers. we won a cup with max as Genos wing and tangradi is a malone type player who played very well with geno. and if tangradi plays with sid we move dupius down and deal with it til the trade deadline

I would much rather them sign a wing, then they really have nothing to lose. Expecially if Tangradi develops. I just don't see any harm in the attempt. If it doesn't work, then alteast it was tried for an extended period. Also, it give RS the knowledge of what limitations he has with this roster moving forward if he ever has to move a center via trade....

I still believe Geno can significantly improve his defensive game. Everyone gives Staal the benefit of the doubt because he's 21 but Geno's only 23. Being good at defense takes maturity and Geno still has plenty to learn but I fully believe that by the time Staal's contract is up, Geno will be closer to being a Datysuk type player than Staal will

Also, both Malkin and Crosby are more effective with the puck. Playing Maklin with Staal allows Staal to create space for Malkin while Malkin has the puck. That's why the two have been efffective when they have played together before. Staal does open up room for Malkin. I am not saying I am for or against this move, only to see what happens.

I seem to remember Staal making some very nice passes this year coming our of the corners, and setting up some nice goals. He is an animal with the puck in the corner, and if you've watch the Pens practice, he's very good at the drive out of the corner pass to the slot play.

All I have ever said was that I don't see the harm in trying a move. IMO nothing bad can come of it. I also don't feel that any move is final. I see Staal and Malkin both playing center a lot this season. I think having Malkin more accustom to wing as a positive this even if the move doesn't work out. Malkin is often moved to wing at times with Sid in close games. If Malkin is more comfortable in those situation only good things can happen. I also feel that if things do not work out, that Malkin will also have a idea of the little things that go along with playing center that Staal does. Malkin has shown that he can be extremely dominate at times, but lacks the consistency that Staal has in his own end.

see dirt i think what your problem is, is that you think inside the box, instead of outside the box. yes, malkin is a great center and is better with the puck. that is not earth shattering news. the PENS MANAGEMENT would like to TRY and bulk up the top 6. there is no garuntee it works, BUT also no garuntee it doesnt. they want to put there best 6 in the top 6 this is how you do it. last year they tried staal on malkins wing and it didnt work out, so back to 3 center model. this year they are trying malkin on staals wing and guess waht, if it doesnt work they will go back to 3 center nmodel. the minute a trade happens like you all babble about on here where everyone pouts and says just trade staal for a winger, you no longer have that 3 center model as a backup plan if it doesnt work out..... now do you understand?

always was better than talbots, and never better than what malone did. you have to remember when talking about malkin being 100 point scorer that was 2 years ago, remember how stoked everyone was we got feds back bc HE played so well and up until january we were begging for sykora to get resigned. sykora fell off and never came back and feds shit the bed this year... malkin had asub 100 point year... they tried him as the wing last year at the beginning and that does not work 3 center model > >>>than staal on malkins wing, you are absolutley right... but now trying to "thik outside the box" (i am not trying to be a smart ass) but thats what this is who knows how a line with staal centering and malkin on wing will go, but i am eager to find out....AND i agree if it doesnt work you go back to the 3 center model, but what does it hurt to try it out??

And I'm saying you've got your order wrong. When you win a Stanley Cup with a model, it does not become the fall back plan just because you didn't win one again. I have no problems trying Staal with Geno if Geno can't produce with the wingers he has

but with the cap and all the extensions, your not even going to get fedotenko/sykoras for him to play with. when they won the cup they had 6 million dollars on his wings syk 3.5 and feds 2.5... your looking to lpay him with guys earning 1.5 and 1.5 now you get that right? and when feds was making 2.5 he earned it

and if you use your stick in the mud theory how come every team doesnt just stick with their same model? how come blackhawks had to blow it up? det and pens had little moves they could have made to adapt, the pens for instance tried staal at wing... no success so they went to 3 center model and fell short now they are going to try this, if it doesnt work they will try another version of the 3 center model.

thats great if contending is all you want to do... pens are in win now... and the blackhawks are exactly what i am talking about how the cap forces you to change when you would prefer to stay the same.... in other words yes if we could have kept staal and malkins and flowers contracts at the entry level stages that would be great adn we could get decent wings... but the cap is the problem. cap
