Steelers, Clark working to get deal done but have "miles to go"

Contract Talks: Latest on Clark, Gay, Reed & Colon

The Pittsburgh Steelers focus at the NFL combine has shifted to starting safety Ryan Clark who is less than a week away from becoming an unrestricted free agent.

Talks between Omar Khan and Joel Turner, the agent for Ryan Clark, have been on-going this weekend with both sides extensively working to get a deal done.

A source directly involved in talks told me this evening that talks are progressing "ok so far, " but the source indicated "we have miles to go before we sleep."

Gay has proven to be a reliable defensive back in nickel and dime situations, and has proven that he isn't capable of starting at this point. He absolutely should be tendered.

Gay's performance in the 09-10 season was the worst that I have ever witnessed by a player in the NFL. The only thing that he has proven is that he is not a professional athlete.

Yes Deesh - that is exactly what people are doing. Yes he was awful as a starter, but he was very solid in nickle during the Super Bowl year and also he filled in welll for McFadden that year. But lets toss that all out the window becuase he was put in a situation that he should not have been last year.

Agreed. The Steelers need to allow Gay to return to extra DB role by either adding a starting corner or promoting one of last years draft picks, Burnett or Lewis. Only the Steelers know what they have in those two.

As long as he isn't starting, I'd keep him at the dime spot. Wasn't bad in 2008 or 2007.

some may scoff, but I'm not willing to claim w.gay was peter principled as a starter. not yet. he's a young player, and could certainly still develop into starter-caliber. but at worst, he's proved to be a valuable backup.
