Steelers place Aaron Smith on IR; Sign Ra'shon "Sunny" Harris

PITTSBURGH ─The Steelers announced today that 11-year veteran defensive end Aaron Smith was placed on the injured reserve list with a shoulder injury and will miss the remainder of the 2009 season.

The Steelers replaced Smith on their active roster by signing rookie defensive end Ra’shon “Sunny” Harris off of the Carolina Panthers’ practice squad. Harris (6-5, 300) was selected by the Steelers in the sixth round (205th overall) of the 2009 NFL Draft out of Oregon.

He was released by the Steelers during final roster cuts prior to the regular season and was subsequently claimed to Carolina’s active roster.

Harris played in two games (Weeks 2 and 3) and recorded two tackles (one solo) for the Panthers this season. Carolina released Harris and added him to their practice squad before he was re-signed by the Steelers.

Harris will wear uniform No. 77 for the Steelers.

This is a big loss. Smith is an outstanding talent. It would be interesting to see Hood play a bit, but this coaching staff knows best.

Huge loss. Smith is a great run stopper. Glad the Steelers got Harris back, though -he looked like a nice prospect.

This is a huge loss and one of the unfortunate things that seems to happen to teams coming off a super bowl. Not sure why it happens like that but that is why it is so tough to repeat. The Steelers will be fine but winning it all again just got a whole lot tougher!!

Good teams deal with injuries which are part of the game. (Best example is when the the 1976 Steelers lost Bradshaw for seven weeks and the Defense shut ouit four etams and gave up a total of 17 points in two other, going 6-0.) Ben and the O just have to put up a ton of points and the DL backups and rookeis have to "do their thng." The sun will still rise on the B&G.

Super bowl teams overcome these type of injuries. We'll see what happens. Hopefully Hood can develop into a starter after the bye week. I don't think that should be too much to ask for

with the salary cap no depth can be kept unfortunately this is end of season you can not win every year a little luck with injuries are part of winning supper bowel
