Steelers sign head coach Mike Tomlin to a two year extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers have announced today that Head Coach Mike Tomlin’s contract has been extended for two new years through at least the 2012 season.

The deal includes an option year which could extend the contract through 2013. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but it is believed Tomlin will receive around $5 million per season.

Tomlin, 38, will enter his fourth season as Steelers head coach in 2010. He became the youngest head coach in NFL history to coach and win a Super Bowl when he led the Steelers to a 27-23 victory over the Arizona Cardinals in Super Bowl XLIII at the age of 36.

“Mike Tomlin has proven to be one of the top head coaches in the National Football League in a relatively short time,” said Steelers’ President Art Rooney II. “His unique ability to lead the team and motivate individuals have been key factors in our success over recent years.”

Hired in 2007 at the age of 34, Tomlin has compiled a 31-17 (.646) regular-season record, including two division titles in his three seasons as head coach. He is the only Steelers’ head coach to have won division titles in each of his first two seasons.

“I have been blessed to have the opportunity to be the head coach for the Pittsburgh Steelers,” said Tomlin. “I am excited to have the opportunity to live and work in this great city, and to focus on the true matter at hand, which is winning football games and bringing another Super Bowl title to Pittsburgh.”
