Steelers to workout veteran CB Stanford Routt

With expectations of Ike Taylor being sidelined for multiple weeks, the Steelers are taking a look at some veteran cornerbacks this week. The prominent name is former Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Stanford Routt who, according to John McCLain of the Houston Chronicle, is headed to Pittsburgh for a workout after he finishes his workout for Houston today.

Routt, 29, has good size at 6-1, 195 lbs, and was the Raiders second round pick in 2005. Routt’s best year was in 2010 with the Raiders when he had 55 tackles, one tackle-for-loss, 15 pass deflections, one forced fumble, two interceptions, and one touchdown. Per Profootballfocus, Routt had the second-lowest “burn rate” of all cornerbacks in 2010, with only 39.4% of passes completed that were thrown to receivers he covered.

Routt though has had trouble staying on a roster, despite his production. He signed a three year, $31.5 million deal with the Raiders in February 2011, but was released after the 2011 season, despite collecting 4 interceptions in 2011. Routt would sign another big deal this past February, agreeing to a 3 year, $19.6 million deal with the Kansas City Chiefs but Routt was released a few weeks ago on Nov. 5.
