***'Beyond Baseball' explores Roberto Clemente's life
The Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition continues through Aug. 24 only at Cal U***
CALIFORNIA, PA (June 4, 2010) . Roberto Clemente Walker (1934-1972) remains a legendary figure in sports, in philanthropy and in the hearts of millions of Puerto Ricans and Americans - especially those in western Pennsylvania.
With a cannon arm and lightning speed, he was an outstanding baseball player, but the Puerto Rico native's legend reaches beyond the diamond.
A Smithsonian Institution traveling exhibition honors this sports hero and dedicated humanitarian.
Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente continues through Aug. 24 in the Manderino Gallery at Cal U, the only western Pennsylvania venue to host the exhibition. Summer hours for the gallery are 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Saturday; the gallery is closed on Sundays.
Beyond Baseball was developed by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico with the Carimar Design and Research studio and organized for travel by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibition Service.
It is complemented by an interactive website - at www.robertoclemente.si.edu - with a virtual exhibition, children's activities, lesson plans, biographical highlights and historic photographs. The exhibition is made possible by the generous support of the Smithsonian Latino Center.
The Clemente Museum in Pittsburgh has collaborated with Cal U during this SITES exhibition by providing more than 100 historical objects and photographs. They offer rare and unique insights into Roberto Clemente's life and complement the visitor's experience.
See the exhibition California University is proud to host tours and educational field trips that introduce the community to SITES exhibitions.
