The wait is over for the city of Chicago and Marian Hossa. Patrick Kane beat Michael Leighton 4:10 into overtime, lifting the Blackhawks to a 4-3 overtime win in Game 6 on Wednesday night for their first championship since 1961.
Kane's goal sneaked past Leighton but there was no red light and a brief review. It was clearly a goal and minutes later, the Chicago Blackhawks were the Stanley Cup champions.
The Blackhawks ended the longest drought in the NHL, while the Flyers Stanley Cup drought (35 years) lives on.
Philadelphia trailed 3-2 late in the third and Scott Hartnell scored with 3:59 remaining to send the game to overtime. Philadelphia had a number of prime scoring chances following Hartnell's goal and early into overtime but Antti Neimi shut the door and made a spectacular save on Jeff Carter with under two minutes remaining in the third.
Jonathan Toews was named the Conn Smythe Trophy winner and after raising the cup first, Toews passed it over to Marian Hossa who finally won his coveted Stanley Cup.
