Why move him at this point? He has absolutely no value and in a very small sample size has been a viable option out of the pen which has already been overworked. If he’s able to continue to give them mutliple innings of solid relief out of the pen he has much more value than can be recouped by moving him.
If you can move his salary and re allocate the money why wouldnt you? A strong middle/long reliever won’t cost 10 million. I am saying if someone is willing to take him, not give him away and eat salary or DFA.

No thanks if it’s what Tim Wiliams speculated. He placed Archer’s value at at least two of Glasnow, Bell and Meadows, plus at least two of Hayes, Newman and Keller. That’s a system killer right there.
Now, of course, with him having a down year all bets could be off with his value being that high. I think having Will Craig around makes Bell someone you could part with in a deal like this, but not if that’s just the start.

I still have an issue with this notion that Shultz took less money to return to Pittsburgh, what he made last season is completely irrelevant because there was no one offering to pay him 3.9M this year. Rumor has it that 1 team offered him slightly more but no one was willing to give him significantly more so money really played no part in the decision. Wit all things being relatively equal he choose Pittsburgh.
The 2.5 million less is directly from his salary from last season. It’s just a commonent to the fact that we got him back at a significantly lower rate. I already commented to the idea that the only other teams that may have been interested were FLA and LA and apparently their deals were in the same ballpark. Quick question for the Pirate fans among us, the Red Sox just acquired Drew Pomeranz for SDfor their top pitching prospect Anderson Esponiza, Pomeranz is in the midst of a breakout season,is only making 1.35M this season and is under team control through the 2018 season, Esponiza is only 18yo so he’s not exactly comparable to the Pirates top pitching prospects but would you have been ok with giving up Tallion or Glasnow to acquire Pomeranz?

You do not trade major league ready, or close to ML ready, top prospects – especially potential frontline starters – for a wildcard 27 year with just one half season of above average pitching (in a pitcher friendly park) under his belt. At 18, Espinoza is a wildcard as well, with scouts mixed on if hes a future 1-2 starter, or a late inning reliever. This is why that trade makes sense.

Mixed reaction to this. A top pitching prospect in Single A is a lot different than a top pitching prospect in AAA. Pirates top 10 prospects a few years back included several of the 09 prep pitchers, most of whom washed out. Kingham was around #5 I want to say and still has yet to throw a major league pitch. Show me an example of a near Major League ready top SP prospect, projected as a 1-2 type starter, who was traded midseason for anything but a proven, good player with term (> 1.5 years) or an elite rental.
I’m very interested to see how Pomeranz fairs in the AL East. Pitching in the NL, especially SD is quite favourable for the pitchers. Pitching at Fenway, AL east ball parks and against al east hitting, lets see how good he really is.
The only problem I have with that is that if the Pirates would have acquired him he wouldn’t be pitching in Fenway or against AL East hitters so it really doesn’t effect whether he could have helped the Pirates or not.

By the time Cutch leaves, he may very well be the third/fourth best available OF option. Polanco/ Marte/ Meadows – Cole is probably gone in 3.5 years, but thats just another reason to not trade potential aces you can control for 6.5 years.
