tiops-smallLatest Penguins Buzz

The dominance in the Metropolitan Division has been something else.

Columbus Blue Jackets (60 points) have won 18 of their last 21 and have points in 19 of 20.

Pittsburgh Penguins (57 points) have points in 15 of their last 16 games.

The surging Washington Capitals (57 points) have points in 16 of their last 18 games.

The New York Rangers (57 points) are 12-5 in their last 17 games.

After steam rolling through the regular season last year, Washington has flown under the radar a bit this season but are starting to look like the Capitals of last season.

The buzz surrounding the Capitals is there’s some regret in the organization that they mostly stood pat at last years deadline.

This season many are expecting to them to go all-in and add at least one impact player.

The Capitals could have been a couple bounces away from beating the Penguins in Round 2 but their Achilles heel was Pittsburgh’s superior third line and the Penguins ability to torment the Capitals bottom-pairing D, turning costly mistakes into goals.

In the summer the Capitals went out and acquired Lars Eller to be their Nick Bonino and Eller hasn’t had the impact yet that’s been expected, with 3 goals and 4 assists in 39 games.

Washington believes they match up well with Pittsburgh but are said to be on the hunt for a depth scoring forward and d-man to better position themselves.

“They’re are all in on [defenseman] Michael Stone,” an NHL source [hide] said of the Capitals interest in the Coyotes defenseman. There’s also been whispers that Washington has kicked some tires on Coyotes center Martin Hanzal, type of third line center who could be a game changer in a seven game series with the Penguins.

Penguin pro scouts have been tracking Stone as Pittsburgh is set to have some preliminary scouting meetings next week.

Penguin coaches would like to see the team add a stable presence on the backend by the deadline.

Adding an impact top-6 winger with term on their contract is also not being ruled out. The team has identified 3-4 targets. The Penguins have more interest in adding a long-term winger than a rental.

Another Metropolitan team believed to be hot for Stone is the New York Rangers who desperately need another top-4 defenseman.
