Pirates, Marlins in trade talks
Marlins eyeing Matt Capps
Pittsburgh Pirates closer Matt Capps converted his 13th straight save opportunity on Tuesday and he’s a player teams are giving a strong look as the trade deadline is less than 25 days away.
The Florida Marlins are making a play for Capps after failing to land Baltimore closer George Sherrill in trade talks.
The Pirates would like a right-handed hitter with power to balance a lineup that leans to the left and the Marlins would be willing to trade first baseman Gaby Sanchez, who is hitting .289 with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 49 games at Class AAA New Orleans after missing a month because of a sprained knee.
The Pirates, though, want more than just Sanchez, who is becoming a little old for a prospect as he turns 26 on Sept. 2, in return for Capps.
Another team expressing interest in Capps is
the Minnesota Twins. The Twins have been scouting Capps over the past month and they have had an interest in the young closer for sometime.
Capps has posted a 1-1 record with nine saves and a 2.85 ERA since June 1st.
To acquire Capps it will be costly as the Pirates are looking for a bargain in return. The Twins have also been linked to Pirates second baseman Freddy Sanchez.
More Pirates Rumors
Two players who have been on the trade block since the off-season are Adam Laroche and Jack Wilson. The Pirates have had a difficult time trying to move Wilson for the past two seasons and they are having the same difficulties this time around.
Multiple sources indicate “No Market” for Jack Wilson at this time and the same goes for Adam Laroche.
Two teams who expressed some kind of interest in Laroche earlier in the season were the San Francisco Giants and New York Mets.
The Pirates haven’t heard from either team in over a month according to a team official.
