With the addition of outfielder Brandon Jones who was claimed on waivers today, the Pittsburgh Pirates will have to clear one spot on their 40 man roster for the potential signing of reliever Octavio Dotel.

This evening the Pirates designated right-handed pitcher Steven Jackson for assignment.

@ Sarge: Garrett has 3 more years of the minimum then 3 years of arbritration. The Bucs own his rights for "6 more FULL years" of MLB service time

Dont give the pirates any credit, they are only paying duke so the players organization doesnt get on their ass. Their motives are always secondary. If Garrett plays well, theres no way he is here more than 3 years, because we will trade his ass away for doing good.

Argenis Diaz can't hit, never has and never will. Plus, the system is loaded with shortstops like Mercer, D'Arnauld, Cunningham, Friday, etc. He should be a prime candidate to go.

I've always wondered how Jones fits into their long term plans. I think he's too old to be considered a prospect at positions with guys like Gorkys, Clement, Walker, Laroche, Alvarez and that rule 5 guy (OF and corner infielder positions). I just hope he keeps up the production and if not try and trade him, since he's not a prospect, before his production slips too much ala McLouth.

geno GO AWAY! We get it....you're against what the Pirates are doing....you're one of the people that for some reason can't see the difference between Huntington and Littlefield. Until you can see....stop saying the same thing over and over and over again. We get it! But to get back on topic, I think Diaz would clear waivers. Not a humongous loss if he doesn't, but he is a nice depth guy to have around based on defense alone.

Upon further thought - I know Jakubauskas was an off-season addition, but I don't see why they would value him over Jackson. Jackson really seemed to progress last year, I'd hate to see him go.

How could anyone be FOR what they are doing? They haven't got a clue, and neither do the fans that naive fans that blindly follow/support this joke team. I choose not to pay for games, support them, etc NOT because they are bad, but because they do not care to win. They show no committment to their fan base, they dont give a rats ass about you. This team SUCKS

geno, you have a problem with what the organization is doing, so since your so smart how would you fix it (you cant say sell the team)? no free agents want to come here, so the only way to improve would be through trade. just like in hockey you have to give to recieve. NH has not traded any promising prospects, check wikipedia. for the first time the pirates have actually cleaned house and rebuilt the farm system. If NH touches promising guys on the farm then we are in trouble, but he hasnt. he has not over paid for a name since he has been here like DL did (check Matt Morris and several others). i know everyone is tried of 3 and 5 year plans or whatever, but DL always abondoned his plan and you cant do that if you want to win. This is just my insight to what NH is doing and i think this is how you fix a small market team. so again i ask wtihout selling the team, without increasing payroll how would you fix them? once you have a better plan you can say they suck all you want

I'll ask you this, where were they going with all of these guys? Not a winning season and when those guys eventually leave they would have no one in the minors. What's naive is thinking that once Huntington gets here he all of a sudden doesn't care. Can't win with guys like this. They keep the players, they're idiots. They trade the players, they're idiots.

How many more games would we have won with Bay, Nady, McLouth, Freddy, and Jack? 75. maybe 80. That isn't going to cut it. So if you want the .500 season you keep all the veterans but who wants a goal of .500? - NH is doing a good job by getting value and bodies that can fill out the farm system.(aside from Capps) This is a young hungry and somewhat talented team that will be exciting to watch, which in years past it was just another long boring season with aging veterans making to much money. I'm not saying we are winning 82 games this year but atleast we have a young core (Cutch, Pedro, Lincoln and Jones) to have some hope.
