Volquez 3-1 with 2.48 ERA in last five starts, McCutchen stays hot

Still not enough of a sample size to say the Pirates have turned Edison Volquez (4-5, 3.89 ERA) career around, but he continues to be a pitcher on the upswing for now.
Volquez threw seven scoreless innings and the Pirates (32-34) pitched a 4-0 shutout against the Cubs to take 3 of 4 from Chicago (26-38).
Volquez allowed seven hits, struck out five and walked two. He threw 99 pitches, 67 for strikes. It was the first time in nine starts, Volquez went seven innings.
Volquez lowered his ERA to 3.89 and has a 1.18 WHIP and a 53/25 K/BB ratio in 78 2/3 innings this season.
  • Andrew McCutchen (.321 – 10 HR – 37 RBI) continued his hot bat with two doubles and two RBIs in the win. McCutchen is batting .428 (18 of 42) in the month of June and his hitting streak is at eight games. Manager Clint Hurdle said McCutchen is “McHot” right now.
  • Russell Martin (.279 – 3 HR – 18 RBI) added two doubles and is batting .474 in his last six games.
  • Tony Watson pitched a scoreless eighth inning, lowering his ERA to 0.87. Hurdle is pushing hard for Watson to be one of the Pirates All-Star representatives.
  • The Pirates begin a three game series with the Marlins on Friday. The Marlins are a surprising 34-31 on the season.
