Wednesday Afternoon Practice Report: Roethlisberger expected to start vs NYG

LATROBE, Pa. -- The Pittsburgh Steelers are nearing the end of their 2010 training camp at Saint Vincent College, as the club went through a final practice in front of the fans Wednesday afternoon.

There will be a brief morning workout Thursday before the Steelers head back to Pittsburgh to finish out the preseason. And that was foremost on head coach Mike Tomlin's mind.

"It's been awesome,'' Tomlin said. "There's no substitute for what we do here. The atmosphere is awesome. We appreciate the fans, the facilities, and it's been a great experience for us. So, we just want to finish it the way we should. (But) we need to guard against the finality of the preseason.

"Camp is coming to an end, but the reality is that we still have three (preseason) games remaining and a lot of time to continue to develop this football team, determine the final 53 (final roster) and the roles that they will have (who will dress during the regular season).''

The Steelers also prepared for preseason Game 2 against the New York Giants Saturday at 7 p.m. at the New Meadowlands Stadium in East Brunswick, N.J. The Giants run a four-three defense, so the Steelers had to practice against it.

"We (were) working off the service cards (the Giants plays) and are trying to find our tempo and preparation from that standpoint,'' Tomlin said. "We need to develop in that area as well, providing looks for ourselves and servicing each other (the offense and defense).''

The Steelers also continued to work on down and distance, changing the downs and yards needed for a first down on each play in one period.

On a third-and-two play with Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback, Dwayne Wright got the handoff as the halfback and ran for the first down. Frank The Tank Summers was the up-back. Justin Vincent, a second-year running back, had a nice run on second down. But Antonio Brown dropped a sure first-down pass.

"I was glad to get a little more work than usual,'' Vincent said. "Hopefully, that will continue in the game this weekend, so I can show what I can do.''

Charlie Batch came on for a third-and-two play and hit Eugene Bright for the first down. Batch came right back to Summers on a quick toss to the sideline. On third-and-two with Summers as the up man. Batch handed off to Dwayne Wright for the first down.
