NFL Player turned NFL Analyst turned NFL Player Ryan Clark was critical of Ben Roethlisberger last week while working for ESPN as an analyst during the bye week.
“Sometimes you to have to protect Ben against Ben,” Clark said on ESPN. “Right now, we have to tone Ben down in a sense and say, ‘Hey, right now, we’re not a good enough football team for you to try to extend plays, for us to take sacks, for us to have turnovers.”
I’ve been critical of Roethlisberger for not adjusting his game and Clark has a point, but Clark is pretty much the last person right now who should be blabbering about the quarterback play, considering his play has been so poor this season and he is another bad game or two away from rookie Shamarko Thomas or possibly Will Gay taking his job, which has been discussed internally.
Roethlisberger did not fire back today. “It is what it is,” Ben said. “I’m just going to play the game the way that I play it and try not to turn it over. That’s the great thing about the country we live in. Everyone is entitled to their opinion and allowed to say what they want. If Ryan feels that way, then that’s fine.”
At the end of the day, Clark’s comments do no good and based on Clark’s play this season, the Steelers are looking smart for not extending him and the team came close to making an offer as some in the organization were pushing for it.
