PENGUINS GETTING ATTENTION OF OTHERS?The Penguins are far from perfect team. They have issues on the penalty kill, are inconsistent defensively and they don’t exactly get great goaltending from Marc Andre Fleury.
That said, the Penguins are scary good offensively and chatter in league circles is the Penguins scoring prowess is getting the attention of at least one top Eastern Conference contender who are said to feel the need to bolster their scoring punch as the Penguins have the look of a team that could go on a run and just outscore everybody, regardless of how good of a team they are going up against defensively.
That team is said to be the Boston Bruins, league sources say. For weeks GM Peter Chiarelli has already been actively looking to add a third line forward to bolster the team’s depth and his focus is also expected to be on the top-6 winger market.
The third line forward could be filled internally with Carl Soderberg of the Swedish Elite League who intends to join the Bruins at somepoint in the coming weeks and is regarded by scouts as the real deal. The Bruins have also been actively linked to Ryane Clowe and Brenden Morrow. The Bruins, though, are a team to watch in the market for a top-6 winger.
League sources believe the Bruins are prepared to pay the premium to acquire Jarome Iginla and also intend to look into Corey Perry to see what’s going on there, although Perry is a longshot to get traded. The Bruins are also said to have looked into Blues forward Chris Stewart but like Perry the price is steep for Stewart.
In regards to Iginla, Boston figures to be the Penguins toughest competition in the East for the 35 year old winger, were the Penguins to decide to go all in for Iginla. “Peter will surely be looking to keep Iggy away from Pittsburgh getting their hands on him…..you can bet on that!” an NHL source said.
In the West, the Los Angeles Kings have been rumored throughout NHL circles for a year now as being the one team Iginla had interest in joining.
