Analysis: Aaron Smith has his sights set on returning to Steelers for 14th season in 2012

By Dale Grdnic PITTSBURGH — Aaron Smith returned to the Pittsburgh Steelers locker room Thursday afternoon to get ready for a workout, and he spoke with some media members about his present and future and the team’s future without him. Smith started the opening four games this season, but injured his right foot in the Oct. 2 loss at Houston that gave the Steelers a 2-2 record. Several weeks later, Smith had his sore neck checked out, and a herniated disc was discovered that needed surgery. He was placed on injured reserve Oct. 22. [instory] Some believe that signaled an end to his illustrious 13-year Steelers career, but Smith wasn’t so sure. He hasn’t been told anything by the Steelers and probably won’t reach a decision for at least a month after this season comes to an end. “I still fantasize about it,” Smith said. “I drive down the roadRead More »

Grdnic’s Camp Tidbits; Smith in typical form; Polamalu on health; Sweed grateful, healthy

By Dale Grdnic LATROBE, Pa. — It might have been just a walk-through, but 13-year veteran Aaron Smith approached the Friday morning session like any other. Smith did everything asked of him during the hour-long workout and then stayed after to hit the blocking sleds with his fellow defensive ends. And even though Smith has played in just 11 games the past two seasons and 38 the past four years due to various shoulder and arm injuries, he looked pretty good. “It was as much for me as it was for them to get me back into it, to hit the sled and get back into feeling it was a good thing for me,” Smith said. “As far as health-wise, I feel great, but we really won’t know until I play some real football. But I’m in great condition. (And) as far as status-wise, until they tell me otherwise, I’mRead More »

Ryan Clark among players whose focus is not where it should be

After a 2-6 start, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed pride in 2006 when they finished 6-2 in their final eight games that included a overtime victory of the Cincinnati Bengals in their regular season finale. In the midst of a five game losing streak, that’s the big question surrounding this years team. Do they have it in them to finish on a high note? Mentally it doesn’t look like it Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark went on a tirade following practice on Wednesday, criticizing the fans and media for what Clark claims to be is harsh coverage of the players. Clark went as far as calling the media turds as frustrations are brewing in the Steelers locker room. “You watch the Eagles, you watch the big plays given up, and I started checking other media outlets and you don’t hear the things about them in their media that you hear aboutRead More »

Wednesday Practice: Eason in the mix to replace Aaron Smith

Now that Aaron Smith is done for the year, playing time for Ziggy Hood should increase. Hood, the Steelers’s first-round pick in this year’s draft, won’t start at left defensive end Sunday against the Cleveland Browns. But he’s in the mix of replacements who’ll try to measure up to the high standards set by Smith over the years. “It will probably be a committee of bodies trying to fill (Smith’s) void,” coach Mike Tomlin. “The usual suspects: Travis Kirschke, Nick Eason and Ziggy Hood.”
