The Steelers tried aggressively to trade up in the second round to land Oregon center Max Unger but after failing to find a trade partner, the Steelers traded their 2nd round and 4th round pick to the Denver Broncos for two third round picks (79) & (84). The Steelers now have three third round picks as rounds 3-7 resume at 10:00 a.m. on Sunday. Unger was a target for the Steelers in the first round and would have been a great value in the second.
Five hours until the NFL Draft kicks off and the Steelers will be playing the waiting game as the Super Bowl Champions have the last selection in the first round. There has been a ton of buzz the past 48 hours that the Steelers¬†are looking to go¬†defensive line in the first round. They have two potential targets at the top of their wishlist in Missouri’s Evander Hood and San Jose State’s Jarron Gilbert. If Hood is off the board, the Steelers will strongly consider moving back a few picks, adding an extra draft pick and selecting Gilbert in the early to mid second round. Defensive Line, Cornerback and Offensive Line¬†remains in play with pick #32. Penn State Update Penn State Linebacker Aaron Maybin, a projected top 20 pick ran the 40 yard dash in the unofficial time of a 4.78 this morning. As reported last week it was speculated that Maybin gained 12-15 pounds and that appears to be the case. Maybin weighed in at 249lbs. Wakes Forest Linebacker Aaron Curry regarded as the top linebacker entering the draft ran the 40 yard dash in the unofficial time of 4.54. Curry is believed to be getting consideration as the #1 pick¬†according to recent reports. Center A.Q. Shipley helped his stock as he ran a 5.19 40-yard dash and also bench-pressed 225lbs – 33 times. Shipley is still seen as a mid-round selection because of his size but teams like him and feel he has value. There could be a team out there that takes him earlier than most people think he will go. Photo courtesy of SteelCityHobbies The Pittsburgh Steelers held their victory parade in downtown Pittsburgh today. Mike Tomlin and defensive coordinator Dick Lebeau deserve a lot of credit for the team’s success on the field but Kevin Colbert deserves a lot of credit for constructing a Super Bowl champion. The Steelers got minimal production from their 08 draft but Colbert make key draft picks in 07 such as Lawrence Timmons, William Gay who didn’t make much of a impact in 07 but were unsung players on the 08 team. I doubt there are many fans questioning the team drafting Lawrence Timmons now. He’s going to be a special player next year. 2007 Second round pick LaMarr Woodley who has 8 sacks in four career post-season games is developing into one of the games top linebackers. The Steelers 07 draft class is looking very good. In 2006 Colbert moved up seven spotsRead More »
