Breaking down the Steelers signing of safety Mike Mitchell

 

Safety Mike Mitchell passed his physical today and the Steelers made the 5 year signing official Wednesday afternoon. The deal is worth $25 million over 5 years with $5.25 million guaranteed. What does the signing mean for the Steelers? Two things quickly jump out. They have upgraded at the safety position in a big way over an aging Ryan Clark and secondly they have eliminated the need to draft a safety in the first couple rounds which is very important for a team on the cusp of being a playoff contender that is very thin at a number of positions, namely wide receiver, defensive line, inside linebacker, running back and cornerback.
